Hairpin Vortex Formation a Case Study for Unsteady Visualization
نویسنده
چکیده
To better understand the vortex dynamics of coherent structures in turbulent and transitional bound ary layers we consider direct numerical simulation of the interaction between a at plate boundary layer ow and an isolated hemispherical roughness element Of principal interest is the evolution of hairpin vortices that form an interlacing pattern in the wake of the hemisphere lift away from the wall and are stretched by the shearing action of the boundary layer Using animations of unsteady three dimensional representations of this ow produced by the vtk toolkit and enhanced to operate in a CAVE virtual environment we identify and study several key features in the evolution of this complex vortex topology not previously observed in other visualization formats

On Coherent Structures of Turbulent Open-channel Flow Above a Rough Bed
Present study examines turbulent structures of a rough bed open-channel flow in the context of deterministic approach. Instantaneous velocity field is measured in different hydraulic conditions using two dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in vertical plane and Stereoscopic PIV in horizontal plane. Different techniques and quantities such as swirl strength, two-point and cross-correlat...
متن کاملWake transition of a rolling sphere
We present dye visualizations of the flow generated by a sphere rolling along a solid surface in a quiescent fluid at low Reynolds numbers. Recent experimental and numerical studies of this configuration (Stewart et al. 2008, 2010) have shown a transition from steady to periodic flow at a Reynolds number Re (based on the sphere diameter and rolling speed) near 100. The unsteady flow involves th...
متن کاملVortex core detection: back to basics
Analyzing vortices in fluid flows is an important and extensively studied problem. Visualization methods are an important tool, and vortex cores, including vortex-core axes, are frequently objects for which visualization is attempted. A robust definition of vortex-core axis has eluded researchers for a decade. This paper reviews the criteria described in some early papers, as well as recent pap...
متن کاملVisualizing Time-Varying Phenomena In Numerical Simulations Of Unsteady Flows
Streamlines, contour lines, vector plots, and volume slices (cutting planes) are commonly used for flow visualization. These techniques are sometimes referred to as instantaneous flow visualization techniques because calculations are based on an instant of the flow field in time. Although instantaneous flow visualization techniques are effective for depicting phenomena in steady flows, they som...
متن کاملUnsteady aerodynamics and vortex-sheet formation of a two-dimensional airfoil
Unsteady inviscid flow models of wings and airfoils have been developed to study the aerodynamics of natural and man-made flyers. Vortex methods have been extensively applied to reduce the dimensionality of these aerodynamic models, based on the proper estimation of the strength and distribution of the vortices in the wake. In such modelling approaches, one of the most fundamental questions is ...
